When you start exercising, your brain sends signals to your muscles to work harder. Your heart then beats faster, so more blood can carry oxygen and nutrients around the body. Breathing becomes deeper because the lungs need to take in extra oxygen and remove carbon dioxide. At first, muscles use stored energy, but after a few minutes they begin to burn more fat and sugar. This process creates heat, and the skin helps cool the body through sweating. In 2020, researchers reported that regular movement can improve the way the body controls blood sugar. During moderate exercise, blood flow to working muscles may rise by about 20%. The brain also releases chemicals that can reduce stress and make people feel more positive. If a person trains 3 times a week, the heart and muscles gradually become more efficient. Rest is important too, because tissues repair themselves and energy stores are replaced after activity.
