The first universities appeared in medieval Europe when towns were growing and more people needed educated specialists. Before that time, learning mostly took place in monasteries, cathedral schools and private lessons with respected teachers. In 1088, a group of students and teachers in Bologna organised a community that later became famous for law. Similar communities soon developed in Paris, Oxford and other cities, where theology, medicine and philosophy were also taught. A university was not just a building, but a guild, which protected its members and set rules for study. Students often travelled far from home, rented rooms and listened to lectures in Latin, the common language of educated Europe. Most courses began with the first 3 subjects of the liberal arts: grammar, logic and rhetoric, and then continued with more advanced studies. By 1200, some universities had received special rights from kings or popes, which made them independent from local authorities. These early institutions helped to preserve ancient knowledge and created a model of higher education that still influences us today.

For me, the most important factors are personal interest, job stability and the chance to learn new skills. I also think it is necessary to consider the working conditions and the real demand for this profession.

School can help by organising meetings with specialists and visits to universities or companies. Teachers can also explain which subjects are needed for different courses and support students who are uncertain.

Do you think higher education is necessary for a successful career?

I do not think higher education is necessary in every profession, because some people succeed through vocational training or practical experience. However, for medicine, engineering or science, a university degree is usually essential.

What would you do if you realised that you had chosen the wrong field of study?

First, I would try to understand whether the problem was temporary or serious. If I was sure the field did not suit me, I would talk to an academic adviser and look for a programme that matched my abilities better.

Hi, Kate! I’ve found two photo-illustrations for our project “Choosing a future profession”, and I’d like to explain why they can work well. In the first photo, a school leaver is talking to a career counsellor at a desk, with brochures and a laptop in front of them. This picture suits the project because it shows a thoughtful and organised way of matching interests with possible jobs. In the second photo, several teenagers are visiting a modern engineering laboratory and watching a specialist demonstrate equipment. I think this illustration is useful too, as it presents real contact with a workplace and helps viewers imagine a profession in practice. However, the two photos are different in their focus. The first one shows personal guidance and individual reflection, while the second one shows practical experience and teamwork. This contrast is important for our project because young people often need both advice and direct impressions before making a decision. As for advantages and disadvantages, a counselling session can save time and reduce anxiety, but it may be too theoretical if the student has never seen the job from inside. A workplace visit can be inspiring and memorable, although it may show only the attractive side of a profession. In my opinion, school leavers should combine several methods when choosing their future career. They should analyse their abilities, speak to professionals and try short internships or open days, because one source of information is rarely enough. That is why I would use both illustrations in our project: together, they show a balanced approach to career choice. I hope these ideas are helpful, and I’m sure our project will encourage classmates to think more seriously about their future.
