Coral reefs are often called the rainforests of the sea because they shelter many living things. Yet many reefs are disappearing as the ocean becomes warmer and more acidic. When the water is too hot, corals lose the tiny algae that give them food and colour. This process is called bleaching, and a bleached coral may die if stress continues for weeks. Pollution from farms and towns can also cover reefs with harmful chemicals and extra nutrients. In 2023, scientists reported that some tropical seas reached record temperatures. Overfishing is another problem, because important fish that clean the reef are removed. However, reefs can recover if local people protect them and reduce damage. Marine reserves, cleaner rivers and careful tourism can give corals a better chance. Researchers are also testing heat-resistant corals, hoping to restore 30% of damaged areas in the future.

Hi, Anna, I’ve found two photo-illustrations for our school project "Protecting the environment", and I’d like to explain my choice. In the first picture, a group of volunteers are collecting plastic bottles and bags on a river bank. In the second picture, two teenagers are planting young trees in a city park. I think both photos suit our project because they show ordinary people taking practical action instead of only talking about ecological problems. Also, the images are clear and positive, so they can make our presentation more convincing. However, the pictures are different in focus and in the time needed to see results. The river clean-up gives an immediate result, while planting trees is a long-term activity whose benefits appear gradually. Moreover, the first photo is connected with waste pollution, whereas the second one is about improving air quality and creating habitats. As for the advantages, both activities are affordable and can involve many students with simple tools. They also teach responsibility because participants see how their own behaviour affects nature. On the other hand, clean-up days do not stop people from throwing rubbish again, and young trees need regular watering and protection. In my opinion, teenagers should take part in both actions, but reducing waste every day is even more important. If we buy less plastic and sort rubbish correctly, we prevent pollution before it reaches rivers and parks. That is why I suggest using these two photos and ending our project with a call for small daily eco-friendly habits.
